Questions of Context, Conditions of Interior explores the many faces of the interior, through sound, ambiguity and geology. The project was a response to the unique degree of freedom afforded by the design thesis, and the associated ability to explore alternative avenues of design.
It is a tower in Melbourne’s CBD that extends 100 metres above and below ground, mirrored at the groundline. In an urban ensemble of extreme verticality and density, this tower explored the capacity of the high rise to contribute, rather than denigrate, the civic realm.
The project received the highest grade of 160 students, is nominated for a number of forthcoming awards, and is the University of Melbourne nominee for the 2020 RIBA Silver Medal (forthcoming).
This project was supervised by Professor Alan Pert, Director of the Melbourne School of Design.
